Prisms are placed in ophthalmic lenses for two reasons:
- For aesthetic reasons to make the lenses more balanced in terms of thickness.
- To compensate for ocular deviations
Prisms are used in all progressive lenses, the use of prisms in these lenses aims to balance the thickness of the lenses so that one area of the lens is thick and the other is thin.
As the prisms deflect the light, they are also used to correct the ocular deviations mainly in those that cause diplopia, the individual sees two images of a single object, in some situations we can make the images coincide with the application of the prisms, and the patient sees only one.
